So it’s official. Electric Hot Tuna has booked two nights, December 3-4, 2010, at the renowned Beacon Theater in NYC to celebrate the 70th Birthday of founding member, Jorma Kaukonen.
We know some of you heard about this earlier, but we waited to announce it until we knew when tickets would go on sale. That date is September 11, 2010.
The band plans to rock the show with songs that span Jorma’s entire career. We also plan to invite friends old and new to join us in celebrating this special event!
We want to know who you would like to see join the band on stage. Leave us a comment on your dream line up.
Stay tuned, more to come.

Press Release
Legendary Guitarist Jorma Kaukonen turns 70,
Celebrates on stage with Hot Tuna & friends in NYCHot Tuna has decided to throw the ultimate party for Jorma’s 70th birthday, one that will mark over 50 years of performing for the renowned guitarist.
On Dec. 3 and 4, 2010, Jorma will take the stage with his celebrated band Hot Tuna for an electric show at the Beacon Theatre to kick-start the celebration. Throughout the night, fans should prepare to be astounded, as a star-studded line up of musicians and friends of Jorma’s have committed to helping him commemorate the evening. In a career that has spanned over half a century, Jorma has played and collaborated with the best musicians around. For the 70th birthday celebration, these performers will join him on stage to help embrace the occasion, their camaraderie, and most importantly the music.
Joining Jorma first and foremost will be Jack Casady. His friend and musical partner since the fifties, Jack joined Jorma in California when the two of them helped launched the legendary band Jefferson Airplane. From here they branched off and founded Hot Tuna who’s longevity and popularity has astounded even them. This union has spanned over 50 years, making Jorma and Jack two of rock’s longest standing duos.
Teaming up with Jorma and Jack will be their electric band mates. Currently touring with Hot Tuna Electric is mandolinist Barry Mitterhoff. A friend since his work on Jorma’s 2002 Grammy nominated CD, Blue Country Heart, Barry’s musical contributions to Hot Tuna add an element all their own. His career highlights are unmatched; he’s performed at the White House, and his work can be heard many movie soundtracks.
Hot Tuna is also thrilled to be playing with special guest drummer Skoota Warner. Known as “The Funky Drummer,” Skoota has performed with the likes of Santana, Matisyahu, Mary J. Blige, Cindy Lauper and Lionel Ritchie. He is tagged as one of the best Soul, Rock, Gospel & Pop drummers around and is a fresh addition to guys’ electric lineup.
Finally, Hot Tuna is ecstatic to play with this A list guest directory. Without naming names, because quite frankly they’d like to leave that a surprise, fans would be foolish not to take in one or both of these shows. The guest appearances are quite different for each night but all Jack and Jorma are willing to say is that the music will cover their early years to present with musicians from the folk, blues, songwriter, psychedelic, southern rock and contemporary world of music.
These guys are veterans of their craft. They continue to play not only because they have the ability, but also the drive to push themselves as musicians and the desire to play under any and every circumstance. It is this notion that makes this collaboration, especially on a milestone birthday like Jorma’s 70th, a truly epic event and one you won’t want to miss.

how ’bout Crosby, Kanter, Slick, Derek Trucks, Lesh, Taj Mahal…the ghost of Rev. Gary…
great blog thank you
.I would love to see Al Kooper getting into a groove with Jorma and Jack at the Beacon.
Enter your comments here…happy 70th birthday jorma , been huge fan 35 plus years
Enter your comments here… Jerry G. of course and Grace come out of retirement
David Crosby, Phil Lesh, Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks…. For starters!
Enter your comments here… Someone said that Paul and Jorma are feuding. If so what about ? It would be terrible if Paul wasn’t at the party. My 12 year old daughter wants to see Paul so bad. I told her I would ask. Anybody?
Enter your comments here… i would like to see the Hot Tuna line-up of the 90’s, Pete Sears, Michael Falzarano, and Harvey Sorgen playing taps on his chest with jorma and jack of course
In addition to the special guests and line-ups from the different eras, it would be nice to get back to the roots with a mini-set each night: acoustic Jorma and Jack, the essential duo.
Todd E you hit the nail on the head-the ESSENTIAL HOT TUNA!!!! As much as I love a 2nd guitar with them a short, acoustic set of just the 2 of them would be heaven! Hell a tour would be great as well. The only other thing I can add is INVITATION!!!!!!
Jorma, how ’bout coming back to the Keswick in Glenside, PA? We sorely miss the pre-Thanksgiving Eve show.
Enter your comments here…What about Marty Balin joining the festivities? His Jefferson Airplane songs would enhance Jorma’s 70th birthday party!
Enter your comments here…If you are going to bring up Rev. Gary….. well Papa J. and Tom Hobson would be part of my dream line-up…. for that band in heaven…and don’t forget JG!
-DJ/NY
Enter your comments here…Grace of course, some Airplane, can’t forget Phil and Bobby
The HT site doesn’t say it yet, but we in Israel know HT is coming to Tel Aviv later in December, after the Beacon shows. So, if there is any chance of bringing some old friends along for that…like Al Kooper, Marty Balin, et. al…., well, wow. You all do know that Harvey Brooks lives in Jerusalem, Israel, now, don’t you? Two bassists on one stage? Well, maybe not, but…
My friends and I are eagerly awaiting the HT visit to Tel Aviv. I haven’t seen HT since 1973, when it opened for the Allman Brothers Band at University at Albany, when I was a student there. What a show THAT was! Jorma came out with a double-necked guitar and had his short “speed skating” haircut.
Enter your comments here… This Republican paid dearly for good Saturday night tickets and I’m not rich by anyones standards. Let’s quit calling names as it doesn’t help a thing. Why don’t we all get together and have a great time with Jorma and friends.
Bob Steeler. Please. At least half a set of good old Hot F’n Tuna. Loud, long, electric, and PLEASE just the three of them. Last time I saw HT (a couple of years ago), during the electric set the drummer used brushes. BRUSHES!!! At an electric Hot Tuna show!?!?! WTF? Is nothing sacred?
Hey Jon—that was then, this is now. Nevertheless, I second your recommendation of having Bob Steeler on hand for a mini-set of balls-to-the-wall, rampage Hot f’in Tuna!!! As the lyric goes, “This could be the last time…”
I would love to hear some Burgers tunes…and I think Larry Campbell could do a mighty fine Papa John.
my only tune request is Hamar Promenade… and Genesis…and Embryonic Journey…and Third Week in The Chelsea…and Song for the North Star….and about an hour long Funky #7…oh, yeah, I could go on.
Yowza – Steeler! Looks like the Marshall stacks will be rented, the wah-wah pedals will get greased and the trio will make my right ear lose a couple of freqs like my left did in 1976!
Pull out the trio as the opener and start the show with that rare 1977 tune “The Party Song”
it’s the only tune I ever heard Jack sing. And please add to that a request for “Great Divide: Revisited”
Should be a fun time in New York F*ckin’ City.
Enter your comments here…I”d like to see Blues from an Airplane with Grace, Marty and Paul harmonizing to J &J
Police Dog Blues !
How about a DVD set of the entire event? Thanks to Ticketmaster we have lousy seats and wont be able to see very well.

I’ve noticed that there’s a Jerry Tribute concert in SF on 12/4. So do you think the guys playing there will show up Friday and head back to SF for the Jerry tribute? Hope so. Both nights are sold out. I think I got the last two for Friday. Last row in the Balcony.

Enter your comments here… Hopefully you guys can track down Will Scarlett for a couple of
acoustic numbers with just Jorma and Jack. It would be great to hear Marty Balin and Paul
sing a couple harmonies. I would be nice to see Grace show up,though we should expect that her would perform. Look forward to the Saturday night show!

Nobody has yet mentioned the venerable Michael Falzarano… who will be there… and seems to be the guy who is managing the “talent” portion of the event. Thank you, Michael!

Well as fas as dream guest who are possible, I would most like to see any former Airplane member besides Jack who are not Paul. Warren Haynes, Phil Lesh, Levon Helm, Bob Weir, Arlo Guthrie, Wavy Gravy, Bob Dylan, David Bromberg and David Lindley are also on my wish list, and of course G.E. Smith but I think he we still be on the Roger Waters tour and therefor not available.
I’m more looking forward to the loud electric stuff but hope each show still has 25% acoustic and a couple Jorma solo songs.
Songwise, I’d like to hear Mann’s Fate, Living In The Moment, If This Is Love I Want My Money Back, Water Song, Good Sheppard, and Light Of This World. I’d like to hear some cool covers Jorma has never done before, and anything off of America’s Choice or Hopkorvv, finally, I never get tired of Embryonic Journey. It would be cool to open the first night with Embryonic Journey just Jorma solo then close the second night with it full on electric with band.
As far as completely dreaming and would never expect to to hear but it would be really awesome to hear with a guest singer, Last Wall Of The Castle, 3/5 of A Mile In A Second, Lawman, and Somebody To Love, (Bless His Pointed Head style)
That all said it does not mater who shows or what they play both night are gonna be sweet.
Happy 70th Jorma
Would love to heat them play “Eve of Destruction.” A great song about troubled times… like right now!
Hey guys!
I would like to hear an acoustic set. Really anything you guys play acoustic would be great. With a few extra voices on a couple of songs would be even better!!!
Enter your comments here…Mama Cass?
What about Will Scarlett????????

Enter your comments here..
Sammy on drums would put me over top.
Great to hear the big man is invited. Kick ass Bob…Nothing like the three of them together. Those shows from the 70’s were priceless!
Glad to see Bob gets a chance to play with Jorma & Jack again… I know he’s thought about it for a long…long…time. To me, Hot Tuna is most certainly Jorma, Jack, & Bob. Kick ass Steeler! Your friend…REG
I really hope that Bob Steeler plays both nights at the Beacon; this is a historic reunion worthy of both shows.
Songs that haven’t been played in many years that would be ideal for the celebration are:
Invitation
Sunrise Dance with the Devil
Easy Now
Song for the Fire Maiden
Song from the Stainless Cymbal
Feel So Good
Free Rein
Extrication Love Song
Enter your comments here…would love to see acoustic set “no Barry” then an ass kicking set of full volume electric with j&j and Bob and any “friends”that show up. Happy 70th Jorma
would love to hear Ice Age & Trial by Fire
Happy Birthday Jorma!
I don’t miss the old loud electric stuff, as good as is was in its day, and mostly acoustic would be great.
thanks, Pete
