So it’s official. Electric Hot Tuna has booked two nights, December 3-4, 2010, at the renowned Beacon Theater in NYC to celebrate the 70th Birthday of founding member, Jorma Kaukonen.
We know some of you heard about this earlier, but we waited to announce it until we knew when tickets would go on sale. That date is September 11, 2010.
The band plans to rock the show with songs that span Jorma’s entire career. We also plan to invite friends old and new to join us in celebrating this special event!
We want to know who you would like to see join the band on stage. Leave us a comment on your dream line up.

Press Release
Legendary Guitarist Jorma Kaukonen turns 70,
Celebrates on stage with Hot Tuna & friends in NYCHot Tuna has decided to throw the ultimate party for Jorma’s 70th birthday, one that will mark over 50 years of performing for the renowned guitarist.
On Dec. 3 and 4, 2010, Jorma will take the stage with his celebrated band Hot Tuna for an electric show at the Beacon Theatre to kick-start the celebration. Throughout the night, fans should prepare to be astounded, as a star-studded line up of musicians and friends of Jorma’s have committed to helping him commemorate the evening. In a career that has spanned over half a century, Jorma has played and collaborated with the best musicians around. For the 70th birthday celebration, these performers will join him on stage to help embrace the occasion, their camaraderie, and most importantly the music.
Joining Jorma first and foremost will be Jack Casady. His friend and musical partner since the fifties, Jack joined Jorma in California when the two of them helped launched the legendary band Jefferson Airplane. From here they branched off and founded Hot Tuna who’s longevity and popularity has astounded even them. This union has spanned over 50 years, making Jorma and Jack two of rock’s longest standing duos.
Teaming up with Jorma and Jack will be their electric band mates. Currently touring with Hot Tuna Electric is mandolinist Barry Mitterhoff. A friend since his work on Jorma’s 2002 Grammy nominated CD, Blue Country Heart, Barry’s musical contributions to Hot Tuna add an element all their own. His career highlights are unmatched; he’s performed at the White House, and his work can be heard many movie soundtracks.
Hot Tuna is also thrilled to be playing with special guest drummer Skoota Warner. Known as “The Funky Drummer,” Skoota has performed with the likes of Santana, Matisyahu, Mary J. Blige, Cindy Lauper and Lionel Ritchie. He is tagged as one of the best Soul, Rock, Gospel & Pop drummers around and is a fresh addition to guys’ electric lineup.
Finally, Hot Tuna is ecstatic to play with this A list guest directory. Without naming names, because quite frankly they’d like to leave that a surprise, fans would be foolish not to take in one or both of these shows. The guest appearances are quite different for each night but all Jack and Jorma are willing to say is that the music will cover their early years to present with musicians from the folk, blues, songwriter, psychedelic, southern rock and contemporary world of music.
These guys are veterans of their craft. They continue to play not only because they have the ability, but also the drive to push themselves as musicians and the desire to play under any and every circumstance. It is this notion that makes this collaboration, especially on a milestone birthday like Jorma’s 70th, a truly epic event and one you won’t want to miss.

Enter your comments here… as far as the guests go, i imagine a list of players important to Jorma and to us as fans. i’m sure we will hear the “who knows” blues player and of course some acoustic. maybe Bob Weir even. but lets face facts. we would really love it if perhaps just this one last time we might hear JA. they should sing harmonies… something like “We Should Be Together”. if it actually were to happen i’m sure we are talking only a few songs at most. Marty’s voice has not been much of late and i don’t know who here has heard Paul Kantner lately either. though i would bet Grace can probably still sing. dream on.
Enter your comments here…Jorma should use his G_d installed Martian cells embedded behind his protruding brows to summmon down Janis, Jerry, and Jimi from heaven for both shows. ‘Nuf said. Happy Birfday Jorma. Cintanni brother.
Enter your coAnything they decide to do will be awesome but I have a very fond memory of Jourma, Jack and Bob literally shaking the walls of the Palladium (NYC) in the 70’s doing Half/Time Saturation…of course that was back when Bob would fire one up before the songs…seeing that energy recreated again would be outstanding!mments here…
Just glanced the dream setlist, an oldie request from me would be Trail by Fire, and guest visit…my number one request is Grace, and btw, she might have a limited note range, but boy, can she sing in that range. A fan since Town Hall, NYC, you both know that show, I’m sure.
Enter your comments here…Happy Birthday Jorma,,We are looking forward to these special shows,, they should be great. Most folks have put together a dream set lists and a wish list of guest players.. its all good.. Im sure whoever graces the stage with Jorma and Jack they will be “living in the moment’ for sure. Thanks for so many great shows over the years..70 years young,,our family wishes you all the best,, good health, good friends and great family… thanks Jorma.. enjoy the shows!!
be well, BK
Enter your comments here…I would love to see Carlos Santana show up . My fantasy show would be Frank Zappa and Jerry Garcia . Anyway it will be great , who ever shows up .
Enter your comments here…Would love to hear, Living on the Farm, We Could Be Together, all that good stuff, but then the other Hot Tuna material that they don’t usually play live. Very exciting!! can’t wait for whatever they do choose to play, and HAPPY 70th BIRTHDAY to Jorma!!! That’s what we’re all here for! Long Live Jorma!!!!
Enter your comments here…I know getting Grace on stage again would be a tough sell, but how nice would it be to hear her do ‘Third Week In The Chelsea’ with Jorma & Jack? It would seem to be one song for which she could set aside her “too old to rock ‘n’ roll” feelings.

Happy Birthday, Fellow Finn! I just tried to send you an e-mail at jormakaukonen.com, but it came back. I’ll try again, but want to say I knew your father Jorma Kaukonen Sr through the San Francisco Bay Area Finlandia Foundation, and having collected all your early albums with Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, I recognized your name right away as Finnish. So it was a joy to get to know your father later, and talk about how much I loved (and still love) your music.
A friend of mine in San Francisco is also a friend of yours, and he told me about your birthday celebration and your performance. His name is Steve Flamm, and he’s a music buff so we have a great time talking about your music. He was asked to come to your celebration but unfortunately couldn’t make it, but he encouraged me to send you birthday greetings from all of your friends and fans out here.
One more story about your dad, whom I enjoyed so much. When he passed away, the Finlandia Foundation in San Francisco (where I had been president) gave me a book from his library. Inside it reads “to Susan Walima, from the library of Jorma Kaukonen Sr. It’s in Finnish, and the title translates to “Our Most Beautiful Old Churches” (in Finland). My husband and I have been to many of the churches, so I love the book, having done a Ph.D. in Finnish folk music, the Kalevala Epic, and Finnish religious history.
Happy Birthday, Jorma! Let us know if you’re likely to visit or perform in Grass Valley, where my husband and I found the “Finn-like country house of our dreams”. The music community here is fantastic. We’d love to see you!
Sue Valimaa (in Finnish) but I guess Ellis Island thought that was too complicated…
Friday show at the Beacon was ok. Jorma as bandleader during much of second set. Nice fiddle from L. Campbell. Haynes is good, but too much from him. B. Kruetzman added good vibe. Half the crowd in recovery, the other half should be. Still, a good funky vibe.

Read Jorma’s blog on Sat. show. Having attended Friday show I feel cheated. That ain’t right.
Awesome performances and a great vibe all weekend long. Everybody stepped up big time!
Skoota is wonderful; that said, when Steeler was playing that hi hat pattern on Funky #7 i felt like i was 16 again and the Beacon became the Palladium for a few brief minutes.
I remembered sitting in the first row of the balcony in 76, the guy next to me brought three TV Dinners with him into the show and ate them over the course of the next six hours. The balcony shook violently every time Cassidy moved his fingers. My life was permanently MODIFIED. The picture that is the wallpaper of this very web site!!!
If there is any chance to see the three of you play trio please make sure I am there!
Happy birthday Jorma and thanks to all the extended Tuna family once again for the good times.

Enter your comments here…Drove up from the Maryland Suburbs for the Saturday show….it was a show for the ages…had not seen you guys in a while, and was floored. Highlights for me that night were Railroad Blues (with Weir) Bowlegged (nice funky bass interplay) and my personal favourite the Funky #7 (incredible solo’s throughout)…..hope you all stay well and thanks for keeping the blues alive the way you do …..the Rev would be proud.

Enter your comments here…So few things in life come anywhere near being as good in reality as they were in thought. Saturday night at the Beacon stood up to my fondest hopes and wishes both in song selection and guest participation. Steve Earle was perfect in his two song spot and it was at that moment I felt the proceedings could rise to the highest level I’d dare dream of. The sublime double bass and drums pairings added that extra boost that took things into the realm of what if.
It really was a perfect engine. My 27 year old son took me to the show and for, a moment, I saw the enthralled child I shared the Dead’s last Pittsburgh show with when Bob Weir sang “When A Paint My Materpiece” just as he did on the rainy night fifteen years back. The venue, staff, crowd and, especially, the musicians all did their share to conjur a magic moment. I’ve been a Tuna fan since Junior High in ‘72 when I picked up my first copy of Burgers. That was my first experience with ‘adult’ music and saturday at the Beacon was one of my most favorite.
Saturday’s show was great….. Barry’s fills during “Wish You Would” were awesome…. Jorma’s correct they shoild do it again. Maybe a once a year or two “Hot Tuna Alumni & Guests” weekend sounds about right to me. Nice to see that “Hot Tuna” is graceful about its past and seem to be thankful for whats going on now with the band. More than I can say about certain other acts I follow where turmoil seems to be the modis operandi, but then again everything evens out in the end. Thank You for a great performance everyone! Matt

It was basically about the upcoming Electric Hot Tuna showing at the Sherman in Stbg 6/02/11 and the acoustics I noticed the last show I saw there. Just wanted to add the standard of sound, performance, and pure musical talent was at Carnegie Hall back in early 1972 of Electric Hot Tuna from a top balcony front row seat directly in front of Papa John. Although it took me a couple of weeks to be able to figure out how musicians could be that good, I worked it out by rebuilding the engine in my car. I don’t know how I eventually evolved to be a Service Engineer for Bruel&Kjaer Instruments. I hope GE Smith is at the above show. That guy has really good hands and ears too. Mike.
